Spring Luncheon Event

"Dance Comes Alive"

Outstanding Volunteers of Austin
Non-Profit Organizations

Guest Emcees:  KVUE's Tyler Sieswerda and Terri Gruca

featured speaker .....

Cynthia Gregory

Ms. Gregory, the only American ballerina so highly esteemed by Rudolf Nureyev that he called her “America’s prima ballerina assoluta,” has performed in hundreds of ballets, principally with American Ballet Theatre, and had over a dozen works created specifically for her.  Her Odette-Odile defined for generations those roles in Swan Lake.  Her outstanding achievements throughout a brilliant and extensive dance career have garnered her numerous prestigious awards.

In 1991, she became Chairman of the Board of the non-profit organization Career Transition for Dancers at a time when she herself was transitioning from on-stage to next stage.  Now as Chair Emerita, Ms. Gregory remains deeply committed to the invaluable work of assisting dancers facing imminent career change by providing career counseling, scholarships, and other vital services.

Continuing to share her artistry and extensive repertoire with dance companies and audiences worldwide, Ms. Gregory stages classical ballets as well as coaches and conducts master classes.  She brings dance to life in other avenues as well.  Her books, Ballet is the Best Exercise and Cynthia Gregory Dances Swan Lake, are both well-regarded and widely distributed.  Her pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings, inspired by her own best-loved dance roles, have been shown in galleries and commercially via posters and CD covers.  For more details, see her biography on the web.

Bill Bastas

SmileNeverFades

Bill Bastas, founder and President of The Smile Never Fades, has taken devastating loss and channeled it into raising money and awareness for breast cancer and its cure. Bill’s own beloved wife lost her life to breast cancer in 2006. Putting his talents as a photographer to use, he has completed three books filled with essays written by survivors and photos taken by him. All proceeds are donated to breast cancer research and to organizations helping cancer victims, including Komen Austin and the Breast Cancer Research Center. He has played a crucial role in bringing about awareness regarding early detection and assistance with breast cancer. He is friend, advocate, and inspiring example to all who know him and whose lives he touches.

BJ Gerstner

Hospice Austin

B.J. Gerstner is a very special, giving person, who volunteers with Hospice Austin, serving those in our community who are the most vulnerable: the terminally ill, older adults, people living with HIV and AIDS, and children as well as their families. She compassionately and tirelessly gives her time, offering each individual she serves dignity, kindness, and support. She is also 2010 Volunteer Chair of the St. David’s Foundation’s Health Angels. Besides her impact on the people she serves directly, BJ also has a tremendous impact on other Hospice Austin volunteers as well as staff. Her example and attitude help others reach within themselves to find the strength and compassion they need to reach out to the neediest patients and their families.

Martha Holfich

She has also attracted a strong team of engaged and skilled volunteers, and now oversees the entirely volunteer-run tracking team. In addition, she volunteers at Food Bank events such as Reggae Fest, Scouting for Food, CROP Hunger Walk, and the Austin Empty Bowl Project. She also volunteers with El Buen Samaritano, a partner agency of the Food Bank.  Martha is a committed volunteer and amazing role model, who leads by example and motivates others to get involved. She was recently honored with a Travis County R.S.V.P. Spirit of Service Award

She has served the Long Center in numerous other capacities as well, including Chair of the Annual Giving Campaign and also Chair of the trustees’ Development Committee for the inaugural year in 2008-2009 and again in 2009-2010. Notably, she also stepped in at a key transition time to serve as Interim Director of Development, a full-time job she took on entirely on a volunteer basis, and performed with marked dedication and excellence. She has volunteered over 10,600 hours single-handedly at Seton and has given generously of her time and talents to many other community non-profits. Chas Studor

Austin Children's Shelter

Chas Studor is a true volunteer extraordinaire, volunteering full-time since 2008 on behalf of the Austin Children’s Shelter. Under his supervision, the $12.9 million Capital Campaign project to build a new campus on the site of the former airport was successfully completed. Last year, in addition to chairing the Board of Directors, Chas oversaw all aspects of building on the new 13 acre campus, including five cottages for children to live, an education building to attend school, plus several other buildings. He was responsible for every aspect of the budget and construction of the entire campus. Chas has served on many local non-profit boards of directors, including the Salvation Army, Austin Children’s Shelter, St. Martin’s Lutheran Church Pre-School, and Austin Helps Honduras. Chas recently founded a company aimed at expanding the market for fair trade coffees.

She is an ambassador extraordinaire for the Austin Symphony Orchestra and the arts. She has served extensively in leadership positions on local, state, and national levels, and has been recognized as a top ASO fundraiser the past several years. She has been instrumental in helping raise over ten million dollars for the symphony. This accomplished woman also has the distinction of being the first female to serve on various boards and councils, including first chairwoman of UT Austin’s College of Natural Sciences Foundation Advisory Council and first female president of the Austin Community Foundation Board of Governors.

Rufus Woody

Rufus Woody has been a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and More for over 25 years. As a member of our nation’s armed forces, Rufus served in the military for 31 years, and was awarded two Silver Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and 11 Air Medals. Next came a career in public service working for the Department of Public Safety until retiring to dedicate himself fully to volunteering with Meals on Wheels and More. He has consistently logged the most volunteer hours annually and was selected to deliver the Millionth Meal in 2009, the first time this mark had been reached in a single year’s time. He is an exemplary person in every respect and unparalleled volunteer. Rufus is active in St. Albans Episcopal’s Community of Hope ministry, visiting and encouraging people who are ill, and he also volunteers for El Buen Samaritano.
